Panteón Municipal

The historic municipal cemetery, spectacular during Día de los Muertos

The Panteón Municipal is Agua Prieta's main historical cemetery, containing graves from the early 20th century when the city grew rapidly around the copper mining industry. The elaborate ironwork and stone monuments in the older sections reflect the modest prosperity of a frontier mining town.

The cemetery is worth visiting any time, but it becomes genuinely extraordinary during Día de los Muertos at the beginning of November. Elaborate ofrendas (altars) are built at family graves, and the entire space is lit with candles and decorated with marigolds. Few travellers passing through on a November border crossing make the detour here — those who do rarely forget it.

A story
On November 1 and 2, Día de los Muertos transforms the Panteón Municipal into one of the most vivid scenes in the Mexican borderlands. Families arrive after dark with marigolds, candles, photographs, and food offerings, turning the cemetery into a brilliantly lit gathering place where the living and the dead are believed to share a night together. It is deeply moving and entirely accessible to respectful visitors.
