Fuerte de San Felipe

18th-century lakeside fort with a small museum and broad views over Bacalar's lagoon.

The Fuerte de San Felipe is Bacalar's main historical sight, a compact stone fort overlooking the lagoon from the centre of town. Its walls, cannons, and small museum explain why this peaceful-looking waterway once mattered strategically.

The fort is also one of the best viewpoints in Bacalar. Go late in the afternoon for softer light across the lagoon, then walk to the plaza for food or a drink.

A story
Bacalar stood on a vulnerable frontier between Spanish colonial trade routes and Caribbean raiders. The fort was built to defend the settlement, and its cannons now point over water better known for kayaks than privateers.
