Laguna Bacalar

The long freshwater lagoon whose shifting blues give Bacalar its famous nickname.

Laguna Bacalar is the whole reason the town exists as a travel destination. The freshwater lagoon runs like a pale blue river through southern Quintana Roo, with sandbars, cenotes, reeds, and open water changing colour by the hour.

Treat it gently. Some shorelines contain stromatolites, living mineral structures that are easily damaged by feet, anchors, and careless swimming. The best way to enjoy the lagoon is slowly: kayak at dawn, swim from designated access points, and leave no trace.

A story
The lagoon's colours are not a trick of marketing. Shallow limestone shelves, cenotes, and darker channels change the water beneath the sun, creating bands of blue that can look almost unreal from a kayak.
