Baja California's drinking culture varies enormously between the border zone, the wine country, and the resort corridor in the south. In Ensenada, the bar scene around Avenida Ruiz is lively — Hussong's Cantina is the institution, but the surrounding streets have a cluster of bars serving the student and local crowd. In Tijuana, Avenida Revolución was the original tourist-oriented bar strip; the city's real nightlife has moved to the Zona Río.
The Valle de Guadalupe wine region has given rise to a more sophisticated drinking culture: winery tasting rooms with small-plates menus, outdoor seating, and serious local wines. This is very different from the tequila-and-tourists scene of the border towns. In Los Cabos at the southern tip, the resort corridor has every variety of bar from beach clubs to nightclubs.
Craft beer has taken hold in the region: Ensenada in particular has developed a microbrewery scene, and local brands like Wendlandt are now well distributed across the peninsula.
