Getting There

Most visitors enter Baja California by road from the US. The Tijuana crossing at San Ysidro is the busiest land border in the world; other crossings at Tecate, Mexicali, and Otay Mesa are faster but less convenient from San Diego. A valid passport is required.

Flying into Tijuana airport is an option from many US cities; the Cross Border Xpress terminal connects directly from San Diego airport to Tijuana's international terminal via a pedestrian bridge. La Paz (Manuel Márquez de León International Airport) serves the southern peninsula from Mexico City and a few other domestic points.

The Transpeninsular Highway (Mexican Federal Highway 1) runs the full 1,700 kilometres from Tijuana to Cabo San Lucas, paved throughout but winding through extremely remote country in the central section. Petrol stations become scarce south of Ensenada — fill up when you can. There is a Baja Ferry service connecting La Paz with Mazatlán and Topolobampo on the mainland; useful for travellers continuing north through mainland Mexico.
