Sport fishing is the activity that put Cabo on the map long before the resorts arrived. The convergence of the Pacific and the Gulf of California creates an exceptionally rich marine environment, with marlin, tuna, wahoo, dorado, and roosterfish all present year-round and in large numbers. The marina at Cabo San Lucas is one of the best-equipped sport fishing operations in the world, with dozens of charter boats available at various price points.
Charter boats leave early — typically 7am — and return by mid-afternoon. Full-day charters on a private boat are expensive; shared charters are considerably cheaper and allow solo travellers to fish with others. The captains and mates are generally experienced and will put you on fish if the fish are there. Marlin must be released under current regulations; dorado, tuna, and wahoo are fair game and the crew will often arrange to have your catch cooked at a local restaurant. Yellowfin tuna in winter, dorado in summer — the calendar of species is predictable and the fishing is almost always productive.
