Eating out in Obregón mostly means eating at sidewalk stands — and the food is excellent. Tacos come in endless varieties: carne asada, cebosos, cabeza, chicharrón, cahuamanta. The hot dogs are a local institution — wrapped in bacon, loaded with two sausages, onion, tomato, mayo, mustard and chile, eaten standing up and inevitably making a mess.
The seafood is some of the best in Mexico, thanks to the proximity of the Sea of Cortez. Whether from a sidewalk stall or a restaurant, the preparation is inventive and the ingredients are fresh — though take care with raw dishes in the hot summer months.
For sweets, try coyotas (pastries filled with a dark molasses), raspados (shaved ice with flavoured syrup), or pico de gallo — fresh fruit with lemon, salt and chile.
