Municipal Palace

The city's main government building on the central plaza, notable for the large murals by Guillermo Arteche that line its interior corridors and stairwells. The works are a serious piece of regional Mexican muralism — politically engaged, technically accomplished, and almost entirely ignored by visitors who don't know to look for them.

Access during business hours is easy; walk in and ask at reception if you can view the murals. The central plaza outside is the social hub of the city centre, with benches, street vendors, and the usual mix of city life.

A story
The murals inside were painted by Sonoran artist Guillermo Arteche, who trained under Diego Rivera in Mexico City before returning to his home state. The works depict the history of the Yaqui people, the conquest, and the agricultural transformation of the valley — a regional history that receives little attention elsewhere in Mexico.
