Orozco Murals at the University of Guadalajara

The Paraninfo (assembly hall) of the University of Guadalajara contains a cycle of murals by José Clemente Orozco painted in 1936, among his most politically pointed work. The central ceiling mural — "The People and Its False Leaders" — shows demagogues, clerics, and soldiers manipulating a passive crowd, surrounded by the symbols of modern power. Orozco painted it with Franco, Mussolini, and Hitler in mind.

The Paraninfo is on the Plaza Guadalajara, adjacent to the Cathedral. It is open to the public; access is free and the space is used for public events. Combined with the Hospicio Cabañas murals, it gives a comprehensive picture of Orozco's range and ambition.

A story
José Clemente Orozco painted the assembly hall of the University of Guadalajara in 1936, two years before his better-known work at the Hospicio Cabañas. The central panel shows a figure of demagogy addressing a crowd — painted during the rise of European fascism, it was intended as a direct political warning. Orozco was not subtle.
