Parque Mirador Independencia (Barranca de Huentitán)

The Parque Mirador Independencia sits on the rim of the Barranca de Huentitán, a dramatic canyon just north of the Guadalajara Zoo. A concrete amphitheatre and lookout point offer what may be the most spectacular views in metropolitan Guadalajara — the canyon drops steeply to the Rio Grande de Santiago far below, with the opposite rim visible through the haze. On clear days, the scale of the gorge is genuinely impressive.

From the lookout, trails descend into the barranca for those who want to hike down to the river. The paths are steep and poorly maintained — bring water and tell someone where you're going. The amphitheatre at the top is occasionally used for outdoor performances.

A story
The Barranca de Huentitán is a canyon formed by the Rio Grande de Santiago — the same river system that carved Mexico's equivalent of the Grand Canyon further upstream. The Guadalajara zoo was built on the canyon's edge partly because the terrain was deemed too steep for conventional development, and partly because the dramatic setting was thought to make it a better attraction.
