Teatro Juárez

The most ornate building in central Guanajuato, an 1873–1903 confection of doric columns, bronze muses, and pink-and-gold cantera stone tucked between the Jardín de la Unión and the church of San Diego. The interior is a small Moorish-inflected horseshoe auditorium with red velvet and gilt, a vivid trompe-l'œil ceiling, and a Tiffany-style lobby. Guided tours run most days when there is no performance. The Festival Cervantino opens here every October.

When the theatre opened in 1903 with a performance of Verdi's Aida, President Porfirio Díaz himself attended — the train from Mexico City laid on a special carriage and the city draped every alley in flowers.
