The western shore of Isla Mujeres faces directly into the setting sun, and the Sunset Bar is positioned to make the most of it. It is a simple, unpretentious open-air bar on the western side of the island, a short golf-cart ride from the town centre, with unobstructed views across the water to the Cancún skyline silhouetted against the fading light.
The clientele is mixed — honeymooners, long-stay divers, families who have discovered the place — and the atmosphere is relaxed rather than festive. The rum cocktails are worth the trip, made with Yucatecan rum and fresh fruit. Come about 30 minutes before sunset and stay for an hour after; the afterglow is often better than the main event.
