Punta Sur

The southern tip of Isla Mujeres is the easternmost point of Mexico, and the place where the country sees its first sunrise. Punta Sur is dominated by the Parque Nacional El Garrafón, a commercialised snorkelling and diving park with access to the reef just offshore. The park is well-run but undeniably touristy, with zip lines and life jackets and package pricing — if you just want to snorkel the reef, there are quieter and cheaper options on the island.

The real reason to make the journey south is the small ruined Mayan temple on the cliff edge at the very tip. It is modest by archaeological standards — little more than a low stone platform — but the setting is dramatic, with the Caribbean dropping away on three sides and iguanas lounging on every warm rock. The views back up the island towards Cancún are worth the trip alone.

A story
The small temple at the very tip of Punta Sur was dedicated to Ixchel, the Mayan goddess of the moon, medicine, and childbirth. Isla Mujeres — Island of Women — takes its name from the female figurines the Spanish conquistadors found here when they arrived in the early 16th century, almost certainly offerings to Ixchel brought by pilgrims from the mainland.
