Parroquia de la Inmaculada Concepción

The parish church of Jerez is an 18th-century colonial church built in the regional pink quarried stone that characterises the town. The exterior facade is an elegant example of late-colonial Mexican Baroque, restrained compared to the exuberance of Zacatecas city's cathedral but with the same warm, burnished quality in afternoon light. The interior is whitewashed and simply decorated, with carved wooden altarpieces and a quiet dignity that rewards a brief visit.

The church stands on the east side of the Plaza de Armas and its bell tower is visible from almost everywhere in the historic centre. Services are held daily and the church is generally open to visitors during daylight hours. It takes perhaps fifteen minutes to see properly, but the plaza immediately outside — and the view back across to the arcaded portal — is reason enough to linger.
