Plaza de Armas

The central plaza of Jerez is one of the most photogenic colonial squares in Zacatecas state, ringed by arcaded buildings of pink quarried stone that give the town its warm, unhurried character. The arcade — known locally as El Portal — runs along the north side and provides shade for the vendors, ice cream sellers, and shoe-shiners who set up here every day. The square is planted with laurel trees trimmed into geometric shapes in the Mexican tradition, and a wrought-iron bandstand sits at the centre.

On weekend evenings the plaza fills with families and couples, and the atmosphere shifts from provincial quiet to genuine street life. This is the best time to sit at one of the tables under the portal, order a tejuino or an agua fresca, and watch the town go about its business. The church of the Inmaculada Concepción stands on the east side, its 18th-century pink stone facade a harmonious match for the surrounding buildings.
