Arco de la Calzada

The Arco de la Calzada is León's most recognizable landmark: a neoclassical triumphal arch marking the beginning of the Calzada de los Héroes, the city's main pedestrian boulevard. The arch dates to the 1880s and has become the symbol of the city, appearing on postcards and souvenirs.

The Calzada itself is a long, tree-lined pedestrian street running south from the arch, flanked by shops, restaurants, and banks. It is the commercial and social spine of León, always busy with shoppers and strollers. Walking its full length and back gives a good sense of the city's character — a place that takes shopping seriously and has built an urban infrastructure around it.

A story
The arch was built in 1884 to mark the entrance to what was then the most elegant boulevard in the city. It became the unofficial symbol of León after the devastating flood of 1888, when the city was nearly destroyed and rebuilt — the arch was one of the few structures that survived.
