Eating Out

León's food scene reflects its position in the heart of Mexico's cattle country — beef is everywhere and done well. The city is also known for its tortas (stuffed rolls), which are taken seriously here: the torta de lengua (tongue) and torta ahogada (sandwich drowned in chili sauce) are regional classics.

The streets around the Mercado Hidalgo near the centre are the best place to find market stalls serving traditional food at low prices. Gorditas, quesadillas, and pozole are reliable options. For a more structured meal, the restaurant strips along the Calzada de los Héroes and in the malls on the east side of the city offer a full range from taquerías to international chains.

Look out for enchiladas mineras — a Guanajuato state specialty, enchiladas stuffed with potato and carrot and topped with crumbly cheese, which appear on menus across the region. Carnitas (braised pork) are also excellent in this part of Mexico. Beer is primarily Modelo and Corona; mezcal from the region is increasingly available.
