The most rewarding day trip from Los Mochis takes you to Bahía de Topolobampo, the vast natural bay 24 km southwest of the city. Shared taxis run from the Los Mochis city centre to the Topolobampo waterfront throughout the day. Once there, arrange a boat tour with local operators or fishermen to explore the mangrove channels and spot dolphins in the main harbour channel. Birdwatchers should head for the estuary to the northwest of the port, where herons, egrets, and wintering shorebirds gather in good numbers. If you are continuing on to Baja California, the Baja Ferries terminal here runs overnight sailings to La Paz.
