Magdalena de Kino is a pilgrimage town wrapped around a single square. The Plaza Monumental, with the crypt of Padre Kino at its centre and the Templo de Santa María on its north side, can be explored in an hour but rewards a slower wander.
For something less obvious, the Palacio Municipal was once the seasonal seat of Sonora's state government when officials fled the summer heat of Hermosillo; it is still in use and the courtyard is open during working hours. The Mausoleo Luis Donaldo Colosio honours the assassinated 1994 presidential candidate, a native son who is still mourned across Mexico.
