The Belmar opened in 1923 as the first international-class hotel in Mazatlan, and most of the cinema stars and writers who passed through in the city's mid-century heyday stayed here — John Wayne, Tyrone Power, John Huston when he was filming on the coast. The bar at the front of the hotel still looks roughly as it did in the 1940s: heavy wood, mirrors, tile floors, and a terrace looking out across Olas Altas to the Pacific.
The hotel itself has had a difficult few decades and the rooms are not what they were, but the bar is a fine place for a sunset margarita with a sense of the city's past. Go for the view and the history; the cocktails are not the point.
