Norteño cooking is the city's culinary identity: cabrito (roasted baby goat) slow-cooked over open coals, carne asada, and flour tortillas made fresh at the table. The restaurants along Avenida Guerrero in the Zona Centro are the most reliable place to eat, ranging from simple taquerías to larger family restaurants. Prices are low by any standard.
Cabrito is the dish to order. A whole young goat cooked over mesquite is the regional specialty of northern Mexico, and Nuevo Laredo's border location means the kitchens have been feeding hungry travelers from both sides of the river for generations.
