The Gateway to the Americas bridge is the oldest and most visible of the four international crossings between Nuevo Laredo and Laredo, Texas. Walking across it — if you carry the right documents — gives you the clearest possible sense of what this city is: a seam between two countries, two economies, and two very different worlds.
The view from the bridge looking west down the Rio Grande tells the whole story of the US-Mexico border: the river is narrower than most people expect, the two cities are essentially continuous, and yet the checkpoint infrastructure on both sides makes the boundary unmistakable. The constant flow of trucks beneath the bridge moves billions of dollars of trade every year.
