Parque Viveros is Nuevo Laredo's largest public park, a 50-hectare expanse of woodland on the eastern edge of the city overlooking the Rio Grande. It feels genuinely detached from the noise and heat of the border crossing — there are walking trails through stands of native mesquite and huisache, a small zoo with local wildlife, and shaded picnic areas that fill up on weekend afternoons with Nuevo Laredo families.
The park's two large swimming pools are popular from spring through autumn, when the heat makes the city's concrete streets unbearable. It is a completely ordinary piece of urban green space that happens to be one of the few places in Nuevo Laredo where you can simply walk and forget the industrial energy of the border for an hour.
