The Zona Centro is the historic heart of Nuevo Laredo, a grid of streets around the main plaza and cathedral that retains something of the character of a traditional Mexican city centre despite the commercial chaos of the border. Avenida Guerrero is the main commercial street, lined with pharmacies, curio shops, and restaurants — the kind of strip that once drew day-trippers from Texas looking for cheaper prescription drugs and souvenirs.
The atmosphere in the Zona Centro is less frantic than the bridge approaches, and the neighbourhood around the plaza has shaded benches, street food vendors, and the ordinary rhythms of a Mexican city going about its business. It is the most humane corner of Nuevo Laredo for a visitor on foot.
