Fuerte de Loreto

A hilltop fort and museum tied to the 1862 Battle of Puebla and Cinco de Mayo history.

Fuerte de Loreto is one of the forts that made Puebla famous in Mexican history. From this hilltop position, Mexican forces helped repel the French army in the Battle of Puebla on 5 May 1862, the event commemorated as Cinco de Mayo. The site now combines the surviving military setting with museum exhibits on the battle and the wider nineteenth-century conflict.

The fort is worth visiting both for the history and for the elevated view over Puebla. It pairs naturally with nearby Fuerte de Guadalupe and the museums around the civic park, making this one of the city's clearest clusters for travelers who want context beyond the colonial center.
