Puebla's UNESCO World Heritage historic centre packs an extraordinary density of colonial-era churches, convents, and tiled facades into a walkable grid. The Zócalo is one of Mexico's finest central plazas; the Rosary Chapel inside Santo Domingo is among the most spectacular Baroque interiors in the Americas; and the Biblioteca Palafoxiana is the oldest public library in the hemisphere. Beneath it all runs a network of centuries-old tunnels only recently confirmed to exist.
Beyond the churches, the city's Talavera pottery tradition is alive in the workshops along Calle 18 Poniente, and the Cinco de Mayo battlefield at the Fuertes de Loreto (north of centre) tells the story of Mexico's 1862 victory over French forces — still celebrated here with particular intensity every 5 May.
