Izta-Popo National Park

Volcanic national park east of Mexico City, with dramatic views of Iztaccihuatl and Popocatepetl

Izta-Popo National Park is one of central Mexico's great highland landscapes, spread around the volcanoes Iztaccihuatl and Popocatepetl. From Puebla, it makes a rugged mountain excursion where the air thins, forests open into alpine ground, and the two volcanoes dominate almost every view.

Most visitors come for viewpoints and hikes rather than technical climbing. Conditions can change quickly at altitude, and Popocatepetl's volcanic activity can affect access, so check official guidance before setting out. On a clear day, the park gives Puebla a wild counterpoint to its polished colonial centre.
