Things to Do

Torreón is not a heritage city — it was built by railways and cotton, not by Spanish viceroys, and most of what you see reflects that industrial origin. What it does offer is a handful of genuinely striking sights: a monumental hilltop Cristo, a sobering memorial to one of Mexico's worst episodes of ethnic violence, and an unexpectedly interesting museum covering the La Laguna region's deep past.

The city also serves as a jumping-off point for the Bolsón de Mapimí desert, home to the famous Zona del Silencio. That trip requires a full day and some planning, but it is the most memorable excursion available from Torreón by some margin.
