Batey is the pueblo's most beloved bar, an open-fronted place on Calle Centauro Sur with a Cuban-leaning menu and live music most nights. The signature drink is the fresh sugar cane mojito, made with guarapo (cane juice) crushed on the spot by the converted Volkswagen at the entrance. The cocktail list extends from there into Cuban classics, dark and stormies, and a long list of rums by the glass.
The crowd is a mix of locals and travellers, and the music — son cubano early, livelier salsa later — is consistently good. The bar fills up after about 10pm and stays full until late. Cash works best; happy hour is the first two hours after sundown.
