Gitano is one of the more theatrical bars on the beach road — a clearing in the jungle hung with strings of golden lights, a long curving bar, and a kitchen turning out small plates designed to share over drinks. The mezcal list is one of the most extensive in the country, with bottles from across Oaxaca and Guerrero; the cocktails are mezcal-led and sweet-sour-smoky.
The crowd skews international and well-dressed; Friday nights have DJs and the place stays open late. It works as a drinks destination, but also as a long lazy dinner: the wood-grilled fish, ceviche, and corn tostadas are good. Reservations recommended for dinner; the bar is walk-up.
