Balankanche Caves

Maya cave sanctuary near Chichen Itza with ritual chambers and underground passages.

Balankanche Caves add an underground dimension to a Chichen Itza visit. The cave system was used ritually by the Maya, and its chambers, formations, and offerings show how sacred geography extended below the surface as well as across the ceremonial city.

Because the caves sit close to Chichen Itza, they work well as a quieter add-on after the main ruins. They are especially worthwhile if you want to understand the landscape around the famous temples rather than treating the archaeological zone as a single isolated monument.
