The Pyramid of Kukulcan

The great stepped pyramid at the centre of Chichen Itza

The Pyramid of Kukulcan, often called El Castillo, is the image most travellers carry away from Chichen Itza. The four-sided stepped pyramid rises from the open ceremonial core of the city, precise, theatrical, and almost impossible to ignore even when the site is crowded.

Its fame is earned. The stairways, serpent imagery, and astronomical associations show how architecture, ritual, and calendar thinking met in the Maya world. Come early if you can; the pyramid is most powerful before the heat and tour groups flatten the mood.
