Ball Court

The ball court at Uxmal is smaller than the enormous court at Chichen Itza but better preserved in some details. Stone rings on the side walls were the targets — players used their hips to drive a heavy rubber ball through them. The exact rules of the Mesoamerican ball game are unknown; the game had ritual significance, and some depictions show the sacrifice of players, though whether victors or losers were sacrificed is debated.

The court at Uxmal has carved stone reliefs on the sloping side walls. The acoustic properties of the enclosed space — voices carry clearly from one end to the other — have been noted by visitors since the colonial period.
