Puuc Route (Kabah, Sayil, Labna)

A circuit of four smaller Maya sites in the Puuc hills south of Uxmal, best done by rented car in a full day combined with the main site. Kabah (18 km south of Uxmal) has the extraordinary Codz Poop palace, whose entire facade is covered with nearly 300 stacked Chac masks — 8,000 individual stone elements forming an unbroken surface of rain-god faces. Sayil has a three-storey palace in an unusually elegant style. Labna has the finest freestanding Maya arch in the Yucatan.

All four sites are UNESCO World Heritage Sites listed together. They are rarely visited compared to Uxmal itself, which means you may have entire ruins to yourself.
