Museo Rafael Coronel

Museo Rafael Coronel occupies the former San Francisco convent on the northern edge of the centre. Its collection of Mexican masks is extraordinary: devils, old men, animals, saints, dancers, and comic monsters arranged in rooms that can feel almost theatrical.

Do not treat it as a quick museum stop. The building is part ruin, part gallery, and part garden, and it rewards slow wandering as much as close reading.

A story
The museum is famous for masks, but the ruined convent setting does half the work. Courtyards, roofless walls, and galleries turn the collection into something stranger than a standard folk-art display.
