Finca Magdalena is an organic coffee cooperative on the lower slopes of Maderas, founded in 1983 by a group of campesino families and run collectively ever since. The farm sits in a beautiful spot — terraced coffee fields surrounded by forest, with views across the lake — and welcomes visitors for tours of the coffee operation, simple meals, and basic but charming lodging.
A walk on the property takes you past a substantial concentration of petroglyphs, including the famous "Sun" boulder. The shaded coffee here is roasted on the premises and sold in the cooperative's little shop. Worth a half-day if you have any interest in coffee, organic farming, or the rural Nicaragua that sits behind the volcanoes.
