La Paz Centro is a stopover town, not a destination — but it's a useful base for two things travellers come to Nicaragua for: volcano boarding on Cerro Negro and the colonial city of León. Within the town itself, the draw is a pair of living crafts traditions: brick-and-tile potters whose workshops you can wander into unannounced, and the quesillo vendors that have made La Paz Centro a household name across Nicaragua.
The setting is pure Pacific dry-forest Nicaragua — flat, hot, scrub, with the cones of the Maribios volcanic chain rising on the horizon. Most travellers see La Paz Centro from the back of a chicken bus on the way to León. It's worth stopping for an hour.
