Casa de los Mejía Godoy

Casa de los Mejía Godoy is a cultural venue and bar associated with the Mejía Godoy family, Nicaragua's most famous musical dynasty. The space hosts live performances of Nicaraguan folk music, nueva canción, and sometimes jazz or rock, drawing a crowd of older Managuans who know the history and younger people discovering it for the first time.

It is one of the best places in the city to hear live music in a genuinely cultural rather than purely commercial setting. The performances are irregular — it is worth checking what is on before planning a visit — but when something is happening, the atmosphere is warm and the music is very good. The bar serves local rum and beer; the entry price when there is a performance is modest. This is the kind of place that represents what Managua can be at its best.

A story
Carlos Mejía Godoy is Nicaragua's most celebrated folk musician — his songs, including "Nicaragua, Nicaragüita," became anthems of the Sandinista revolution and are still sung at political rallies and school events. His brother Luis Enrique is also a prominent musician. The family's cultural weight in Nicaragua is difficult to overstate; their work defined what Nicaraguan popular music sounded like for a generation.
