Mercado Oriental

The Mercado Oriental is reputedly the largest market in Central America, a vast, dense, largely covered labyrinth occupying dozens of city blocks east of the old centre. It sells everything imaginable — fresh produce, live animals, electronics, car parts, pirated DVDs, traditional medicine, clothing, and hardware — in a chaotic and often overwhelming sensory experience.

It is not a tourist attraction in any conventional sense, but it is one of the most vivid places in Managua and the heart of the city's informal economy. Walking through requires confidence and some caution — the market has a reputation for petty theft, and it is easy to get disoriented in the interior. The best approach is to enter from the main edges, stick to the busier aisles, and not carry more than you need. The sheer scale and energy of the place is unlike anything else in the country.

A story
The Mercado Oriental grew spontaneously after the 1972 earthquake destroyed the old city centre. With no government plan for rebuilding, vendors simply set up stalls on the cleared land and kept expanding. Fifty years later, it covers dozens of city blocks and is estimated to employ tens of thousands of people — a city within a city that emerged entirely from the ground up.
