Roberto Huembes Market

The Mercado Roberto Huembes is Managua's best market for handicrafts and the main reason most tourists visit the market district. Spread across a large covered area in the south of the city, it combines a working daily market — fruit, vegetables, meat, hardware, clothing — with a dedicated handicrafts section where vendors sell hammocks, leather goods, pottery, carved wooden items, woven textiles, and embroidered clothing from across Nicaragua.

The handicrafts section is less pressured than the equivalent stalls in Granada, and the prices are often better. It is also a good place to eat: the comedores inside the market serve generous plates of rice, beans, grilled meat, and fried plantains for very little money, with a local crowd who will be amused to see a foreigner at the table. The market also doubles as a bus terminal, with microbuses heading to towns south and southeast of Managua.

A story
The market is named after Roberto Huembes, a Sandinista militant killed during the insurrection against Somoza in 1978. Markets throughout Nicaragua bear the names of revolutionary martyrs — it is a distinctive feature of Managuan geography that you buy your vegetables and hammocks in places honouring guerrilla fighters.
