Playa Venao is a horseshoe of dark sand about half an hour west of Pedasí, and it is the reason most surfers come to the Azuero at all. The bay faces south into open Pacific swell and works almost year-round — beginners get a forgiving beach break at the eastern end, and the waves get serious towards the point, particularly on a big southern swell between April and October.
The bay has changed fast. What was one hostel and a dirt road a decade ago is now a strip of surf camps, beach bars and a music-festival crowd, which some people love and some resent. It is still, on a Tuesday in the green season, a very long and very empty beach.
