Getting there

Tocumen International Airport (PTY) is Panama City's main airport and the primary hub for Central America. Copa Airlines, which is based here, connects Panama City to almost every capital in Latin America and the Caribbean, making it one of the most connected airports between Mexico City and Buenos Aires. Direct flights operate from major North American cities (Miami, New York, Los Angeles, Toronto), and Copa and other carriers offer connections from Europe and South America.

The airport is about 25km east of the city centre. Getting into town: taxis are the standard option and should take around 30 minutes outside rush hour; negotiate the fare before getting in, or use Uber, which is widely available and removes the negotiation. The Panama Metro does not yet reach the airport directly, but the Metro's Line 2 connects to Albrook (the main bus terminal on the western side of the city), and taxis from there are cheaper; this is not the obvious choice with luggage.

Buses connect Panama City to most major Panamanian towns: David in the western highlands (around 7–8 hours), Colón on the Atlantic (1–1.5 hours), and the Azuero Peninsula. The main terminal is at Albrook, a short Metro or taxi ride from the centre. Buses to Costa Rica (San José) take around 12 hours and are served by several operators from Albrook.
