Portobelo's food is simple, fresh, and Caribbean. The staples are whole fried fish pulled from the bay that morning, ceviche with lime and ají, patacones (fried green plantain), and rice and beans cooked in coconut milk. Portions are large and prices are low. A handful of small family restaurants line the waterfront and the main road through town; the cooking is honest rather than elaborate.
