Ensenada

Former company town of the Central Guanica sugar mill

Ensenada was built in the early 20th century as a company town around the Central Guanica sugar mill, which at one point was among the largest sugar operations in the Caribbean. The mill closed in the 1980s, but the rows of small wooden houses, the worker housing blocks, and the ruined mill chimneys remain — a clear architectural fingerprint of the American sugar era.

The neighbourhood is a five-minute drive west of central Guanica and worth a slow wander if you have any interest in the economic history that shaped southern Puerto Rico. Don't expect restaurants or much in the way of tourism infrastructure; it's a residential place that happens to be historically interesting.
