About five miles northeast of Guanica, just off Highway 127, a small marker commemorates the Battle of Yauco — the first significant engagement of the 1898 Puerto Rico campaign. US troops moving inland from the Guanica landing met a Spanish force here on the morning of 26 July. The fighting was brief, casualties were light, and the Spanish withdrew toward Ponce.
The site itself is modest — a roadside marker and a small clearing — and won't keep you long, but it sits naturally on the route between Guanica and inland towns and rounds out a day spent following the events of 1898.
