Plaza Restaurants

The restaurants clustered near the plaza serve traditional Puerto Rican food at local prices with no pretension. Expect lechón asado (roast pork), mofongo in several varieties, arroz con gandules, tostones (fried green plantain), and pernil. The food here is the kind that local families eat on Sunday after church — portions are generous, the cooking is honest, and the setting is as everyday as it gets.

Go at lunchtime on a weekend for the full experience, when the plaza is busy and the restaurants are doing their best trade. Most places close by mid-afternoon and some are not open on weekdays. Prices are very reasonable by any standard.
