The Parroquia San José, Gurabo's Spanish colonial Catholic church, anchors one side of the central plaza — white-painted, with the solid, slightly weathered look of a building that has been the centre of town life for generations. The plaza itself is shaded by mature trees, with benches that fill up on weekend afternoons when local families come out after lunch.
On weekdays it's quiet enough to sit undisturbed and watch the town go about its business. On weekends, especially Sunday, it becomes the social heart of Gurabo: children running around, elderly men playing dominoes, food vendors setting up nearby. It's the best single spot in town to get a feel for everyday Puerto Rican municipal life, away from the tourist circuits.
