Castillo Serrallés

Castillo Serrallés is a Spanish Revival mansion built in the 1930s by the Serrallés family, founders of the Don Q rum dynasty, on the El Vigía hill above Ponce. The house is beautifully preserved, with original furniture, tiled courtyards, and gardens intact, and the tour gives a vivid picture of how a wealthy colonial family lived at the height of Puerto Rico's sugar and rum economy. The rooms are furnished as they were when the family occupied them, and the house feels genuinely inhabited rather than museumified.

The hilltop setting is part of the attraction: the mansion commands panoramic views over Ponce and the southern coastline, and the Caribbean stretches away to the horizon on clear days. Adjacent to the mansion is the La Cruz del Vigía, a large concrete cross built in 1984 to mark the site of an old Spanish watchtower. There is an observation platform inside the cross, and the view from the top is worth the climb. Combined with the mansion tour, the two make a natural half-day excursion from the city centre.

A story
The Serrallés family made their fortune in rum — specifically Don Q, which remains the best-selling rum in Puerto Rico today. They built this mansion in the 1930s at the height of that wealth, choosing a Spanish Revival style modelled on the great houses of Seville and Valencia. The family donated it to the municipality in 1986 after the last Serrallés heir died, and it was opened as a museum after extensive restoration. It stands as a monument to the era when Ponce was the economic capital of the island.
