For a small island, Vieques eats remarkably well. The cluster of restaurants along the Esperanza malecón is the dependable starting point — sit-down seafood, conch fritters, mofongo with shrimp, and a long list of rums by the glass. The kitchens are small, the lines on Friday and Saturday nights are long, and the food is consistently good.
For a more upmarket evening, El Blok in Esperanza and Tin Box further inland are the two perennial favourites. For a cheap lunch, Conuco in Isabel Segunda serves the best Puerto Rican home cooking on the island — roast pork, rice and beans, plantains, and a fresh juice for not much more than a sandwich would cost on the mainland.
