Nevis Peak

A cloud-draped volcanic peak at 985 metres, climbable with a guide, with views over the whole island

Nevis Peak rises to around 985 metres at the centre of the island and dominates every view. The climb is serious — the upper sections are steep, muddy, and involve rope-assisted scrambles through thick cloud forest. It should not be attempted without a guide, and most guides recommend leaving Charlestown by 5 or 6am to reach the summit before cloud cover closes in. The round trip takes 4 to 6 hours depending on fitness.

The lower slopes are covered in secondary tropical forest that transitions through banana and heliconia to tree ferns, bromeliads, and silver palms near the top. On clear days, the summit offers views of Saint Kitts, Montserrat, Redonda, and Antigua. Guides can be arranged through the Nevis Tourism Authority or through several operators in Charlestown — expect to pay around US$50 per person. Bring water, good boots, and clothing for the cool, wet conditions near the summit.

A story
Nevis Peak is technically a stratovolcano, still classified as potentially active though it last erupted around 100,000 years ago. The summit is in cloud for much of the day — most hikers start before dawn to reach the top in clear conditions before the cloud cap forms, usually between 9 and 11am. The upper forest is dominated by tree ferns and mosses, creating an eerie green-grey landscape completely unlike the tropical vegetation on the lower slopes.
